ABOUT

My name is Maya Sokoloff, I am a history major at McGill University and I was born and raised in Atlanta, Georgia. This summer, while partaking in an internship with the Galicia Jewish Museum in Krakow, Poland, I had the opportunity to develop an independent project. Despite having grown up in Atlanta, and been involved in my Jewish community, I realized that I knew very little about the history of Jews in Atlanta. With the guidance and support of my internship coordinator at the museum, Anna Wencel, I came up with a way to combine my hobby of photography and my interest in local history and create a photography series examining historically Jewish places in Atlanta and what they look like today. I learned much more about my hometown than I thought I would, and gained a new perspective on the inevitable losses that accompany the continuous momentum of history.

I am immensely grateful for everyone who helped me with this project. The Breman Museum of Atlanta, Georgia, was always welcoming and a fount of information for all my queries regarding the history of Jewish Atlanta. Lindsay Resnick and Jeremy Katz specifically helped me with the archives, directed me towards other sources, and were incredibly responsive, kind, and helpful in answering all my questions. I also want to thank Dr. Marni Davis at Georgia State University for meeting with me during the summer and answering my many questions, and various synagogue members for sharing their stories and brainstorming resources. Finally, my mom was a true help in driving my camera and me around Atlanta and guarding our place until I finished taking pictures – I couldn't have done it without you!
